Possible problem with Photoshop 2022 related to TIFF files

Some people are reporting that since the upgrade to Photoshop 2022 (confusingly internally known as PS 23.0) they are experiencing difficulty opening TIF or TIFF files. I personally am not seeing any issues around this at all but post the Adobe forum thread for persusal.

It may have crept in with an earlier update to 22.5.2 apparently. There are workarounds but Adobe have been notified. If you have issues then goto the link above and have a read through. You are able to submit the file that you can't open in Photoshop to the Adobe link.

I clicked on the link and had no problems opening the files the guy attached. I have also saved as a tiff in Pixinsight and had no problems opening in Photoshop. Tiffs saved from last year converted in Pixinsight also opened with no problems. Looking at the comments closer, it seems to be a Mac issue, not a Windows issue.

That's interesting I hadn't grasped it was Mac they were having issues with. My doze installation of PS2022 also has no problems whatsoever. I don't use PS on my Macbook Air as it only has 4GB RAM and is circa 2013. RAM can't be added to the Air Macbooks of my vintage.

My mistake, people are having problems with Windows too. It seems the problem might not be Photoshop, but Starnet++. This is one of the comments in the thread.

I have encountered the same problem described here, but similar to others in this thread, the TIFF files that Photoshop 23.0 cannot open are produced as output from an astrophotography image processing application called Starnet++.  In essence, the workflow from original file to conflicting file is Deep Sky Stacker 32-bit/ch TIFF  > Photoshop to edit and save a 16-bit/ch flattened TIFF > Starnet++ to process and output a starless image also in 16-bit/ch TIFF > Photshop file open failure.  I provide a more detailed description, related files inclusive of resaved copies that were opened successfully in Lightroom Classic, ThumbsPlus 10, and Luminar 4, and a video illustrating the workflow in a folder that may be accessed at PS2022-v23-astroTIFFfail. Hopefully this will be of help to Adobe in a quick resolution of the problem.

Also can open it in PS CS3 - very old I know! But it is still installed on my machine.

It's a weird situation. I have downloaded these two tiffs that the commenter's said wouldn't open in PS V2022. Both files opened with no problem on my machine. Both tiffs apparently were created in DeepSkyStacker.

I've tried and they won't load on my PS 2022. I think if enough users around the world keep complaining to Adobe they should get it fixed soon.

Looks like Adobe are aware of the situation regarding tiff files Terry.

This change was originally made to reject Tiff files that lacked an attribute which could pose a security risk. Engineering is working on a change to amend that behavior to calculate the missing attribute when not provided, but only under the constraint that the calculation can be made with fidelity and not cause the security vulnerability.

For now, you can install the prior version to open tiffs from a trusted source. https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/using/install-previous-version.ug.html

We'll update this thread when the fix/update is released.

You need to go to Adobe’s website/forum for help as it is their product Kel. We do not have any solutions.

This is the latest.

"Important: The problem is not with Photoshop, but with third-party software developers who do not keep track of current TIF specifications"

"A temporary solution to the problem is to convert files in third-party editors that completely update the structure of TIF files (for example, xnView, ImageMagik, etc.); such files can also be converted using the Camera Raw plug-in (via Bridge)."
