O-111 filter advantages in observing?

Marmot

Recommended Posts

I have come across references to an 0-111 filter (or is it 0-iii) And was wondering just what advantages this would give to an observer.

There are also a few remarks on the net regarding its usefulness being limited to scopes of a given size. I use refractors with a diameter of 102 and 120mm, therefore my question is weather or not I would gain any benefits from such a filter. (They don’t come cheap so I don’t want to splash out on something of limited use).

thanks for your time and any replies in advance.

Yes it is OIII or O3. They are normally used to view nebulae or planetary nebulae. You do need a big aperture scope though to get benefit from them. It'll probably work ok on your 120mm scope.

There are broadband and narrowband OIII filters. You can use narrowband filters with 60mm apertures if the exit pupil is over 3mm. David Knisely  explains it better than I can.
