A windy M51...

Second time out this week...unheard of!

I thought I'd try M51 again. Haven't imaged this one for a while. Despite the seeing being fairly good last night, the wind picked up and it turned quite gusty. Despite this I probably got my best M51 to date. I only managed about 1.5 hours before I called it a night as I was starting to lose some shots due to the wind. Still amazed seeing these wonders with only an 80mm scope!

Very nice 👍

I couldn't get that result from 2 hours with a 294c, Pro Tec, 115mm APO + 0.8x reducer (f/5.6 644mm FL).

M51 occupied a very small a part of the frame, and not enough resolution to allow for a 'crop'.

Maybe my Altair 294c is below par, when it comes to sensitivity. I certainly find that it doesn't compare with the SXVR H16 that I used back in the day (pre 2014)

Thanks...this is quite a severe crop...blowing it up this large does start to degrade the quality, but there's just enough detail still there to make it bearable I think. In the original shot M51 is rather small...I keep edging towards getting a larger scope!

As astro is now very much a secondary interest to my photography, I'll not be heading back to the big scopes that I had back in the day, when I had 8", 10" and 12" SCTs, which I complimented with a 110mm APO refractor.. You can't beat a large aperture for light grab, and I could do things with those SCTs that I can't do with this 115mm refractor.
