Messier 82 - The Cigar Galaxy

Just once in a while you manage an image that makes you really pleased and this was one for me. It was before I changed my mount and camera so it was taken using an Atik 314L+ - a small but seriously excellent CCD camera. The mount was an HEQ5 Pro Synscan with the belt mod that I fitted a few years before - very well worth doing.

The details of the exposures, equipment, software etc etc are all given on the Astrobin page. If you click on the image you'll get the full version. Hope you like it!

@Carastro @markar

Thank you kindly for your appreciation and comments.

Bear in mind that the camera was a 1.4mpixel CCD device and the x1.6 Barlow that was used is primarily for observing and has very poor vignetting when used for astrophotography. The light distribution across the diameter looks very like an average distribution (bell) curve! Whilst flats compensate to a point, as you know they cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. To reduce the visible edge darkness this is also a cropped image of the 1.4mpixels!

As perhaps you can imagine, I'm interested that you feel there is more to be had from the data, because, as it is, it has been stretched to the point of introducing artefacts and significant noise and distortion. The image you see on screen is a JPEG that has also been denoised so, I'm sure you appreciate, there is little more that can be extracted there.
