TriploverBR
Hey I'm very new to astro imaging so I started a research about good places to get good images of celestion objects, but there is nobody else better to give me suggestions than those who are part of astro imaging groups. Also I want to know a place that I could stay for a weekend and book a stay. Does anyone know any place? I found on Google a list that mention Big Bend National Park and Summit at big bend (hotel), where there are star-gazing domes, does anyone have been there to do some astro imaging? The article I mentioned is: Winter Romance Season: The Best Weekend Getaways For Couples This Holidays (summitbigbend.com)
TerryMcK
Hi and welcome to the forum. This is a predominantly UK based forum although we do have international members too. Maybe someone in North America can chime in as I believe bigbend is in the USA/Mexico.
Adam Y
Welcome to the Forum! Yes Big Bend is around the border of Texas and Mexico, and from what I am able to gather from other forums is an ideal location for all things astronomy. I have not been there, but it is on the List. NB - like most fun hobbies, it is dense in technical detail and easy to spend all evening accomplishing very little. Best to set realistic expectations, if you are luring The Spouse out to the area with promises of a Romantic Weekend, you'll get about half an hour in with your telescope before there is audible sighing and tapping her watch 😉.
Padraic M
Don't know about US dark sky sites, but google 'dark sky map' and you will get maps showing light pollution levels - for example: darksitefinder.com lightpollutionmap.info But boy do those Texans like to keep their lights on!!! 🙂 I see Big Bend NP on the Mexican border is a superb site, classed as level 1 on the Bortle light pollution scale which is as good as it gets. Also check out the various astro weather forecast sites/apps like Clear Outside. Tonight it would be a very romantic place to be with 100% full moon, perfectly clear skies, temperature in the mid-20s and 25% humidity. Not much good for imaging with that full moon but I'd love to be there in 2 weeks time with the new moon. Good luck!
Greg M
I'm from Las Vegas, NV. Maybe I can help you if I have a bit more information. Are you looking for places to go on your own and camp? Or perhaps places that have cabins/rooms and telescopes for you to use? Edited January 14 by Greg M
