TerryMcK
I came to my processing PC today to find that Photoshop 2020 had disappeared from my pinned start menu items. Hmm! A quick gander at the start menu to see that it had been replaced with Photoshop 2021. I’m not sure what has changed in the new version but all my plugins and filters were still in place. So it is now pinned to its rightful spot on the start menu again, along with PixInsight, Affinity Photo, Astro Pixel Processor et al. Some habits are difficult to kick and Photoshop is one of them.
Carastro
I love photoshop, but have an old version which is on a disk. Does all I need.Carole
AstronomyUkraine
Posted by: @TerryMcK I’m not sure what has changed in the new version but all my plugins and filters were still in place. The main changes in Photoshop 2021 are related to AI. One very cool feature is the use of AI to change the sky background on an existing image. Does a really good job too, even on images with trees.
RPK_Astro
Hmm the update to PS 2021 lost my plugins. I had to faff around and copy the plug-in files to the relevant folder, then re-do the security protocols (Mac). Annoying.
Dmack1
Updated to 2021 and it has been a nightmare - first off would not start up saying something about no IPPCV libraries installed. half an hour digging around on the internet tells my that for some reason Adobe have stopped shipping the libraries with the updates WHAT!!. So found alink downloaded copied to the appropriate files and away we go. BUT as per @RPK_Astro my plugins etc were missing. Another half hour faffing about to sort that out. Now it will not allow me to change the default app for .png files so they will only open in the previous 2020 version. All, it seems, so that I can paste a different sky into a picture. This is totally ridiculous and I am seriously unimpressed. ? ? ?
RPK_Astro
@Dmack1 that's dire. The whole 'justification' for the subscription model is more resources for product development and improvement... Adobe's attitude is hacking a lot of people off and as they have a substantial market share, it will only be a while before consumer protection regulators get interested in abuse of market position.

If you get the message about IPPCV libraries not installed and you do some initial searching you may be told that its because 2021 does not work on older CPU and you need to roll back to 2020 - That seems to be erroneous and you can work around it by downloading and installing the libraries. If you are struggling let me know and I'll send you details of how I got round it

Carastro
So glad I have an old version of PS and don't rent it, never do updates, they nearly always take away something I love and put in stuff I don't need.Carole
Nightspore
I uninstalled PS Essentials 2019 late last year (macOS) and paid 100 quid (Apple Store) for 2020. Then when I uninstalled it momentarily discovered 2020 had been replaced by 2021 in the Apple Store, at least I got it at the introductory 50 quid! At least Glimpse is freeware. I don't think it runs on macOS though. I run it on Ubuntu. Edited February 7, 2021 by Nightspore

It is widely used to process astro images, and there are many video tutorials on youtube. Brian

I'm running the snap package. I had difficulty running GIMP on macOS as Gatekeeper claims it isn't signed. Carastro
I tried Gimp once when I was on holiday in Spain with a mini laptop I hadn't installed Photoshop on, and wanted to try to process what I had capture. I could not fathom it out at all, even tried to find some on-line tutorials. Was so glad to get home to Photoshop. Carole

Carole GIMP can take some getting used to, I had it on an old laptop for over three years before I figured out how to save a picture file as a jpeg lol. Glimpse is basically a GIMP fork. Pinta is an open source Paint.NET. I always liked Paint.NET but it only runs on Windows. Edited February 8, 2021 by Nightspore
AstronomyUkraine
For anyone scratching their heads about the new Photoshop update which doesn't allow a tiff file to be saved as a jpeg, here is the workaround. Changing the tiff to an 8 bit image will allow you to save as a jpeg. The easiest way, which I've only just found out, is to use the save as a copy command. Here is the full article explaining why Photoshop have done this, and the fixes. Carastro
I'm still using CS3 and have to do the same thing with that, but I very rarely have a need to save as a Jpeg. I post all images up as PNG. Carole

Now it's been replaced with an Export as command, but the Save for Web is still available as a legacy command.
