Sonyme
I snapped a few images of Comet 2020 F3 Neowise back in July. The head of the comet appears to have blue/green colouration whilst its tail is a diffuse white. Is this the true colour of the comet or an aberration caused by my camera (Cannon 60D - unmodified) or the atmosphere?
Wyvern
That sounds about right to me. I would expect a blue/green hue.
RPK_Astro
The greenish colour is from molecular carbon. The dust tail tends to be yellowish. The colour/s of the ion tail depends on what is being ionised, but blue is the commonest.
Sonyme
Thank you for the replies. Ron, could the same be said for a fireball or is it simply down to the metals they contained? The back of my house overlooks the lower climes of the pennines which are in a north easterly direction from where I live. On a clear night a couple of years ago whilst looking in this direction, I was lucky enough to see a fireball which was almost grazing the skyline and again it clearly appeared blue / green. Jkulin
Thanks Gina, I was lucky with those two, just a single shot grabbed on my Sony A7RIII, the light pollution one was the real bonus ?
TerryMcK
The pictures I took of Neowise C2020 F3 with my regular day to day unmodded DSLR were also the colours you described so that must have been the characteristic of that particular comet. Also superb results with your shots John.
