My RA MOTOR works as i expected but the dec motor only works when i press the up or down button…it wont stay on…..this seems correct but is it….im such a newbie,

That's normal Greg - the RA motor tracks the objects moving through the sky due to the rotation of the planet, whereas the Dec motor is only needed to locate another object in a different part of the sky - ie at a different Dec angle (latitude).

Fully normal.
