gilesco
Saturday night might end up viable for me, I am itching to get my new kit going, finally complete, and lying in wait.Annoying thing is tonight, I could Polar Align (polaris just about visible to naked eye), but rain is forecast later so I dare not risk setting up.Is it worth an Observatory in South Devon (for me I would probably not be satisfied with an Obsy that doesn't have an eventual cost of £20k or so), or should I just relocate to the south of Spain? (Work commitments probably bar that at the moment...)
Jkulin
I have found that having an observatory with bad weather is better than setting up each night as I can take advantage of any hour here and there with out all of the trial and tribulations of having to set up.
TerryMcK
I’m beginning to think an online observatory image acquisition subscription may be better than all the gear I’ve got which is standing idle. It would be nice to have a permanent observatory but at the moment it isn’t viable.
Jkulin
@TerryMick for me I would never be able to count an image if I hadn't owned, set up and personally acquired the image, its not just about the final image but the journey to it, but that is just my opinion.

You are absolutely correct. I think I just need to persevere and hope that the dire skies will clear up,soon.
Carastro
Posted by: @TerryMcK an online observatory image acquisition subscription may be better than all the gear I’ve got which is standing idle.I never see how anyone can get any self satisfaction from simply processing data they did not capture since it is only partly theirs. I am currently doing the IKI processing on SGL, but apart from the first one which I posted on Astrobin to see how it would fare compared to my own images, I have not posted the IKI images anywhere since it is just a processing competition, and that is all it is if you did not capture the data.Carole
Carastro
Now erecting your own observatory elsewhere and operating it remotely is quite different, since the data has been captured by you on equipment you set up yourself.Carole
gilesco
I'm very much with Carole - obtaining, assembling, setting up, operating the kit, and performing the sub-exposure acquisition is the pull for me, my post-processing is not the best, but at the end I can take a step back and know that the final result is all mine.I know there are places where you can rent a pier in a remote observatory and set up your own kit, and also have helpful intelligent remote hands to sort out issues, but once again, that is removing some of the interesting parts for me.I also know that I can literally send a remote company a location in the sky and they will send me raw subs according to my specifications. Now, if I enjoyed post-processing a lot, and didn't like fiddling with my kit, then I guess that would be acceptable, but no, I don't actually enjoy post-processing very much, I enjoy getting a result, but not the process of post-processing.I guess I call it - I'm a "photon to frame" type of person ?
Carastro
For me it is more than the fiddling with the kit, it's the fact that if I didn't capture the image from my own efforts, I just don't feel that I can claim the image as mine. AstronomyUkraine
Looks promising for me tonight, and the next couple of days, according to CO. Looking out of my window at the thick fog tells a different story.
TerryMcK
Hurrah! A clear night. I’m looking at Jupiter and Saturn which are very close. My view south west is dire as I have high trees to contend with but fortunately they are not in leaf so I can see the planets through the branches.First light with my Helios Stellamira 20x80s. Very clear and bright views but needed help from my photo tripod to steady the image. I’m not imaging tonight as we are out visiting my mother tonight whom is in our bubble. May get chance when we get home.

I’m looking at Jupiter and Saturn which are very close. On the 21st they will be within 1° of each other, making it a good shot for anyone with a decent FOV. Problem is they will only be 15° above the horizon.

DaveS
Got a reasonable, if not brilliant, PA. 2.0' error in Az, 0.0' in Alt. Will decide if I can live with that.Focus is still playing silly whatsits with me, but don't yet know where to pin the blame. I do, however think I will order a shorter extension ring from OOUK and re-calibrate the Sesto Senso.
AstronomyUkraine
All set up and raring to go. It looks like I might get a full night of imaging in, but I have said that before and been disappointed. It's quite chilly here also, going down to -7 later. Good job I'm using a remote desktop. ? Carole I am lucky enough to have a permanent set-up. The idea of relocating the kit to a remote overseas site is tempting given the current spell of permanent cloud cover in my corner of the U.K. However, there is something magical about sitting out with the gear on a comfortable, peaceful autumn evening and watching the subs appear, looking up at the sky and listening to the soothing tick of the mount as it does its stuff...
