NGC7380 - The Wizard Nebula

Recommended Posts

Good Evening All,

After a nice streak of clear nights but not many narrowband targets about, at least not in my field of view from my garden. I've never been fully taken by the Wizard nebula, not in the same way as with the Jellyfish or the Rosette. But after a significant amount of imaging time it has started to reveal it's secrets.

Total integration time 24.75h

143x 300s Ha

92x 300s Oiii

62x 300s Sii

This shows the fainter details of the Ha around the nebula itself.

Feedback always welcome.

A great image, and nice to see the widefield view of the Wizard, and the background nebulosity.

Thanks Brian! After the first lot of subs I just had this tiny nebula (for my FoV) in the middle so I decided to go nuts on the Ha. To be honest I'm not sure why I did 300s rather than 600s but i think it worked in my favour as it's still pretty low in the sky at the moment so neither the guiding nor the HFR were great.

Hopefully I'll be moving from my current 20.26 bortle 5 to a 21.26 bortle 4 soon which hopefully will make a difference.

You got something funky going on with your OIII data? Looks like some weird halo on the image, or maybe that's how the OIII is in this target.

I don't image below 30° and the Wizard only reaches that altitude at 2pm here, so would barely get two hours of decent image time on it. I shot this target last year, got 10 hours of Ha, but only 5 hours each of OIII and SII, so I need to add some data to it.

Yeah, that always happens with my Oiii. I'm not sure what causes it but I seem to see the same pattern in my flats, but only the Oiii

any help would be very welcome.

It definitely looks like a filter problem, especially if your other flats are OK. How are you taking the flats? Led panel, sky flats, or some other method? Do you have another OIII filter to see if you get the same result?

That's taken with an LED panel same as the other flats. No other Oiii filter I'm afraid I wonder if it could be defective, might ping Antlia and find out.

Ha for comparison

I have the Antlia OIII filter, and it takes flats as they should look. I also use a flat panel and the flat wizard in SGP to determine exposure.

Hi Wyvern,

in your 92 x 300 shot there appears to be a faint ring around the nebula. What would be the cause of this?

Best Regards

Gary

Hi Gary,

that's what we were talking about in the posts above, it's something with the Oiii filter. I have emailed Antlia for support on the matter.

I hope they replace it for you, there is definitely something not right with it. Do you think it might have been put in the holder backwards? Always worth reversing it to see if the problem still exists.
