Filter recommendations

Just a few questions on filters.

1. Should i take pictures with UV filters in the night?
2. if i dont want to modify my camera can i buy an IR filter? will it achieve the same effect?
3. why would people want to separate different emission lines using filters?
4. and lastly, are there any types of filters you would suggest to a beginner?
