PhotometricMosaic Script 4.0

John Murphy

Recommended Posts

PhotometricMosaic 4.0 is now available. Version 4.0 is not included within the PixInsight core distribution; you need to download it from my website:
https://www.normalizescalegradient.net/

This release includes some important bug fixes, more accurate graphs and many controls now have their own reset button.

It also contains a new section: Join Orientation

Previously, if you have a very large overlap, PMM would fail. This was because the calculated join orientation assumed that the join line is longer than the overlap thickness.

You can usually leave Join Orientation on its default setting (Auto). However, if you have a very large overlap, you are now able to specify the join orientation.

TrimMosaicTile now defaults the trim size to 5 pixels.

I have now created a repository for PhtometricMosaic 🙂

Before you start

  • Install the very latest version of PixInsight: 1.8.9-2 build 1588 (released 2023-10-19)
  • If you manually installed the PhotometricMosaic scripts, or you are using PI 1.8.9-1, please remove the PhotometricMosaic scripts (to avoid double entries in the menus):
SCRIPT > Feature Scripts...
In the Feature Scripts dialog, untick:
  Mosaic > PhotometricMosaic
  Mosaic > SplitMosaicTile
  Mosaic > TrimMosaicTile
Press Done

  • If you are using my previous repository ("nsg.astropills.it/" kindly hosted by Marco. Thank you!) remove it:
RESOURCES > Updates > Manage Repositories
Select "https://nsg.astropills.it/"
Press Remove
  • Restart PixInsight

Install the new PhotometricMosaic / NSG repository

RESOURCES > Updates > Manage Repositories
Press Add
Enter the new repository address. Remember to include the final "/":
https://pixinsight.astroprocessing.com/
Press OK

  • After restarting PixInsight, the updates will appear. Alternatively: RESOURCES > Updates > Check for Updates
  • Remember to restart PixInsight after the update so the scripts are installed!

Problem solving

  • "Network error: Could not resolve host"  Solution: ensure the repository URL ends with "/"
  • Reset the PixInsight update system:

PI 1.8.9-2:
RESOURCES > Updates > Reset Updates

PI 1.8.9-1:
Delete the file 'updates.xri' from the PixInsight root folder to force the updates to install again. For example, on Windows delete: C:\Program Files\PixInsight\updates.xri

Hi John,   I am using the new version of PMM 4.  Unfortunately the great documentation is not accessible.  I assume it has gone missing somewhere in PI.  Any suggestions?

Regards

Scott

Hi Scott,

Details on how to install PMM can be found on on my website, and its Repository page provides the repository URL. Website: https://astroprocessing.com/

If you still have trouble, I will need to know:

  1. Which version of PixInsight are you using?
  2. Did you install PMM manually, or from my new repository?

Hi John,

I am using PI version. 1.8.9.2 Build 1588. I cant upgrade further because my PC is not AVX2 compatible.

I installed PMM via your new Repository.  Interestingly the documentation is missing from NSG as well.  When I look in programfiles/pixinsight/docs/scripts, I cant see any obvious folder for PMM or NSG documentation.

Both the scripts work fine.

Regards

Scott

Hi Scott,

There are several possible reasons for this problem:

(1) If you are using the old repository (nsg.astropills.it) that was very kindly provided by Marco, you need to remove this and replace it with my new repository URL.  Marco is still hosting the old repository while people transition to my new repository URL; I removed the reference documentation from the old repository to reduce the storage and bandwidth impact on his website.

See my website's Repository page for the new repository URL, and instructions.

(2) The very latest PI version (Pi 1.8.9-2 Build 1596) no longer requires AVX2 compatibility. Upgrading to this might solve the problem.

(3) If you still have problems with PMM (or any other script!) updates, see the FAQ page on my website. It provides fixes for most problems.
